Requirements for Training

The following are Pitt GIDRTP requirements for training:

  1. Identification of a local mentor with research experience and funding in the training area.  A mentor at the site where the training will take place is also required.
  2. The use of Brazilian specimens and/or data for the research project.
  3. Completion of a form that includes information about the proposed training and, for training that involves a research project, a brief description of the project.
  4. For training involving research, the approval letter (in Portuguese is fine) from the local institutional review board must be provided.  Studies involving animals involve also require separate animal review board approval.
  5. Training in responsible conduct of research.  This requirement is easily fulfilled for short-term trainees by completing online modules.  In addition to online training, degree trainees must also complete classroom instruction at the University of Pittsburgh.
  6. Acknowledgment of NIH support in any subsequent presentations or publications that result from the supported training:  “This work was supported in part by a Fogarty International Center Global Infectious Diseases Research Training Program grant, National Institutes of Health, to the University of Pittsburgh (D43TW006592).”

Trainees who will receive their masters or doctoral degrees at the University of Pittsburgh are also required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (www.ets.org/toefl  and the Graduate Record Examination (www.ets.org/gre).   The Pitt GIDRTP can provide study materials and financial support for taking these tests. These exams are not required for short-term trainees.
